Albrecht Durer was without doubt the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. He found inspiration in the work of painters of both the major European artistic centres of his time. Albrecht was born in Nuremburg, Germany (1471-1528).
The range and versatility of Durer's work is astonishing and was to have a major influence on the development of European art. An innovator he is the first artist who is known to have painted a self-potrait and to have done a landscape painting of a specific scene.
Although watercolor painting is extremely old, dating perhaps to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe, and has been used for manuscript illumination since at least Egyptian times but especially in the European Middle Ages, its continuous history as an art medium begins in the Renaissance. Albrecht Dürer who painted several fine botanical , wildlife and landscape watercolors, is generally considered among the earliest exponents of the medium. His drawings and water colours are impressive for their diversity of subjectmatter and the varied media in which they were produced.
